Audio Crackling on Gaming Laptops: How to Fix (2026)
Audio crackling — pops, stutters, dropouts — ruins music, calls and games. The causes are usually drivers or DPC latency, not faulty hardware. Here is the systematic fix order.

Diagnosing audio problems
Diagnosing audio issues: the patterns — crackling in all apps (system-level — drivers or DPC latency); crackling in one app (app settings — sample rate, buffer); Bluetooth-only crackling (wireless interference or codec); and crackling under load (DPC latency from stressed drivers — the classic gaming-laptop pattern).
LatencyMon (free) is the diagnostic tool — it measures DPC latency and identifies offending drivers. Run it during crackling; the red bars point to the culprit.
Driver fixes
Driver fixes: update audio drivers (manufacturer support page or Realtek directly — Windows Update lags); update GPU drivers (GPU drivers cause DPC latency — clean install); update network drivers (Wi-Fi drivers are notorious DPC offenders — Intel's latest, directly); and remove bloatware drivers (manufacturer "utilities" with kernel drivers — debloat).
Driver order matters: audio first, then GPU, then network — retest after each. The crackling often dies at step one.
Settings fixes
Settings fixes: disable audio enhancements (Windows Sound → Playback device → Properties → Enhancements → Disable all — enhancements cause crackling on many systems); set consistent sample rate (48000 Hz / 24-bit everywhere — Windows and apps must match); increase buffer size (in DAWs and pro audio apps — larger buffers tolerate more latency); and disable exclusive mode conflicts (allow apps to take exclusive control — or not — consistently).
The sample-rate rule: one rate everywhere. Mismatches (Windows at 44100, app at 48000) cause resampling crackle.
Bluetooth-specific fixes
Bluetooth audio fixes: reduce interference (move away from microwaves, USB 3.0 hubs, other Bluetooth devices); update Bluetooth drivers; try different codecs (Windows Bluetooth settings — SBC is most compatible; aptX/LDAC vary by hardware); and keep the laptop close (Bluetooth range is optimistic — 2 metres is realistic for stable audio).
For music production or critical listening: wired audio (3.5mm or USB DAC) eliminates Bluetooth variables entirely. A £30 USB DAC beats any Bluetooth troubleshooting.
The buffer: the size
Audio buffer size: the setting — the small (the 64 — the low-latency — the crackling); the large (the 512 — the stable — the laggy); and the sweet (the 128/256 — the balanced — the found).
The buffer truth: the crackling (the too-small — the increased — the fixed); the latency (the too-large — the decreased — the balanced); and the use (the tracking — the small — the mixing large). The bufferer (the adjusted — the smooth); the defaulter (the crackling — the enduring — the unnecessary). The buffer (the tuned — the per-use). The size (the matched — the task).
The exclusive: the mode
Exclusive mode: the setting — the Windows (the app-exclusive — the audio — the taken); the benefit (the uninterrupted — the bit-perfect — the clean); and the use (the music — the enabled — the enjoyed).
The exclusive truth: the shared (the Windows-mixed — the resampled — the degraded); the exclusive (the direct — the pure — the better); and the apps (the supporting — the Tidal — the enabled). The exclusivist (the pure — the rewarded); the sharer (the degraded — the unaware). The mode (the toggled — the heard). The exclusive (the audiophile's — the switch).
The DAC: the external
External DACs: the upgrade — the dongle (£10–£30 — the Apple — the giant-killer); the desktop (£100–£300 — the Schiit — the serious); and the benefit (the clean — the powerful — the transformed).
The DAC truth: the onboard (the adequate — the noisy — the limited); the dongle (the cheap — the transformative — the recommended); and the headphones (the deserving — the driven — the properly). The DACer (the upgraded — the hearing); the onboard-sufferer (the hiss — the unaware). The DAC (the £15 — the revelation). The audio (the upgraded — the cheaply).
The codec check: the Bluetooth fix
The audio fixer's Bluetooth is the codec: the SBC (the default — the laggy — the crackling); the aptX (the better — the supported — the switched); and the check (the headphones — the codec — the verified). The Bluetooth crackle is the codec — the SBC struggles, the aptX sings. The 2-minute codec check cures the wireless — the settings, the developer, the switched.
The codec method: the verify (the connected — the codec — the noted); the switch (the supported — the aptX — the chosen); and the enjoy (the clean — the wireless — the freed). The Bluetooth audio is the codec'd — the right codec is the clear. The checked codec is the enjoyed wireless.
The £15 bypass: the worn jack
The audio fixer's hardware is the jack: the wiggled (the crackling — the loose — the diagnosed); the USB (the DAC — the £15 — the bypassed); and the confirmed (the external — the clean — the jack). The crackling jack is the worn — the £15 USB DAC bypasses. The diagnosed hardware is the routed around — the jack retired, the USB hired.
The jack method: the test (the wiggled — the observed — the confirmed); the bypass (the DAC — the bought — the plugged); and the upgrade (the enjoyed — the better — the bonus). The worn jack is the common — the USB DAC is the cure and the upgrade. The bypassed jack is the forgotten jack.
The 2028 hearing: the £15 kept
The clear audio's 2028 is the DAC: the 2026 (the £15 — the bypassed — the upgraded); the years (the 4 — the daily — the enjoyed); and the 2028 (the still clear — the rewarded — the smug). The £15 DAC is the 2028's clear — the 4 years, the daily. The DAC buyer is the 2028's hearing.
The 2028 method: the buy (the 2026 — the £15 — the once); the use (the daily — the plugged — the habitual); and the enjoy (the clear — the years — the transformed). The 2028 clear is the 2026's £15 — the spent, the rewarded. The 2028 is the hearing.
When it is hardware
Hardware faults (rare): persistent crackling across OSes (Linux USB test — if it crackles there, it is hardware); crackling from speakers but not headphones (speaker fault); and crackling correlated with movement (loose connection — professional repair).
Under warranty: audio hardware faults are covered — claim with evidence (recordings of the crackling). Most crackling is software; the hardware minority is warrantable.
